Video: Sweet Tomato, a clever restaurant concept
Sweet Tomatoes is a restaurant concept I think could be interesting in Denmark. You start with the salad bar, pay and then move on to the rest of the food, which is included in the price. It is simple, inexpensive and easy to understand for families and other guests alike.
I visit the restaurant in Florida in January 2010 and show you around in the video. The prices and my descriptions of the food are from that visit. The original text and historical links from the post appear below.
Sweet Tomatoes starts with a long salad bar
I am still experimenting a little with the video format, and this test might get to stay. I am wrapped up warmly because it is bloody cold in Florida. Not inside the restaurant, but I am wearing the clothes anyway.
The concept starts when you walk in. You queue along a long salad bar and take the salad you want. Then you pay and enter the restaurant itself.
What is in there is included in the price. In the video, I say it is free, but of course I am describing the rest of the overall experience after payment.
There are good soups, a little pizza, baked potatoes and other simple things. It is not a huge selection, but I think it is something the restaurant can manage easily.
My wife points out a possible idea behind the ingredients
My wife says the salad is not so interesting to eat when it is a day old, but it can be used for soups. I mention that as a clever idea behind a concept like this.
It is her observation during the visit. I see it as an opportunity to make the ingredients work together across the simple selection of salads and hot dishes.
Inexpensive food that many different people can enjoy
You can get dessert too. In the video, I estimate that the whole experience costs something like 40 kroner. American prices are low, and I suggest that a similar concept in Denmark might cost 79 kroner. In my view, that would still be inexpensive.
I describe the food as low-fat and highlight sugar-free options. My impression is that it is healthy, fresh and quite sensible. At the same time, it seems easy for the restaurant to handle.
On the tour, I show the small tables and look at the guests. My impression is that there are pensioners, students and many other kinds of people. It is not just one particular group coming here.
Soup, pizza, dessert and a discount club
I go back to the salad bar and show how you start at one end, take your salad and then find your table. Then I move on to show some of the rest.
I point out the option of joining their club and getting discounts. There is cola and other drinks, soups, pizza, scones and various other things.
I also show chocolate mousse, which I describe as sugar-free, and some pasta. It is all part of my enthusiasm for a place where guests can help themselves to the food.
I believe in the idea for Denmark
What I find interesting is the combination: Low-fat food, low prices and a concept that is a little trendy but still something families can enjoy.
I believe a restaurant concept like this could work in Denmark. It is a little input from Florida that I hope you can use. If you start a restaurant like this, you have your first customer right here. You can find my own experiences as an entrepreneur in Iværksætter til jeg dør.
Sweet Tomato is a clever restaurant concept that would definitely work in Denmark. Website:

Helt Klart.
Super godt spottet, Martin 🙂
Venlig hilsen,
Christian
