Be yourself..
Live your own life. Life is short, and you don’t get a prize for doing what everyone else thinks you should. So find yourself and go for it. That was my point in this video from 2011.
Live your own life with respect for others
I’ve had lots of criticism for speaking loudly and swearing. But it’s my video channel and how I speak. It’s annoyed some people, while others have liked the edge it gives me.
Why should I wear a suit and tie if I don’t want to? As long as I don’t harm others and treat them respectfully, how I live should be up to me. I hope you think the same about your own life.
You shouldn’t live your parents’, friends’ or partner’s life. Nobody thanks you at 90 for spending your life meeting everyone else’s expectations.
Work out what you dream of yourself
I spoke with a man who had a boring job but was happy it gave him five weeks of diving holidays in Thailand every year. It made me ask: Why not explore becoming a diving instructor there?
You can ask yourself the same question. What do you want to spend your time on? What are your dreams once you set aside what others think you ought to do?
Break the big change into small steps
If you want to move countries or change your work, it can feel overwhelming. Sit down with a piece of paper and write where you are now and where you want to go. Make a sort of business plan for your life.
Then break the journey into small chunks. What needs to be in place before you can leave? Take one step at a time instead of letting the whole task overwhelm you.
I found that being myself let me work on something exciting, live by Delray Beach and have family and friends around me. Work out what you stand for, and start on your own path. Also read Skab din egen succes about exactly that: Finding your own way instead of living by other people’s expectations.
Choosing your own path also requires distance from everyday life. Read my thoughts on why holidays give you perspective.
So find yourself and go for it!
You can’t please everyone
Lots of new people have joined the channel after the past few days of the Holger debate. The video now has around 40,000 views, which is completely crazy. It’s also made me think about the many comments on my language.
I understand some people react to my speaking loudly and swearing. I’ve had quite a bit of grief for that throughout my life. But on this channel, it’s me speaking. At home, you can speak politely or shout as you please. I don’t need to become someone else to make everyone like me.
That edge has meant some people can’t stand me, while others think I’m pretty cool. That’s part of being yourself. My line is harming others, hitting others or ruining their lives. Respecting others is part of it, of course.
It’s not your canary’s life either
When I ask whose life you’re living, I mention your parents, friends and partner. And your canary, to push the point a little. The point is the same: You need to discover who you are inside. That person is the most important person in your life.
I certainly don’t dare gamble on getting another life when I can do what I really wanted. If at 90 you see you’ve lived everyone else’s life, nobody will come and thank you. So make a bloody effort to live your own.
From five weeks’ holiday to a plan for everyday life
The story of the man with the diving holiday is about how you spend the rest of the year. He said he was happy with his job, even though it was bloody boring, because it gave him those five weeks in Thailand. But if diving is what he loves, why not investigate becoming a diving instructor?
If you love plants, it could be gardening. If you love the beach, perhaps the dream is becoming a lifeguard at Delray Beach. Maybe hunting or fishing is what you want to work with. Those are examples of looking inside yourself and finding what you want rather than what others want for you.
With a big change, your thoughts can quickly run wild: Your partner will be upset, your family will be upset, and you’ll need to resign. That’s why the plan needs to go on paper. Write down what needs to be in place before you can leave or change your work, and solve those things one by one. Even big journeys start with small steps.
What seems strange can become what makes you special
If someone thinks you’re strange, consider whether that very thing could make you special. For me, it’s included shouting and swearing. I haven’t shaped myself around how everyone else thought I should be.
Here in 2011, I can walk around in flip-flops and shorts at Delray Beach, earn decent money and do what I want. I have a good family, good friends and a bloody exciting job I look forward to every day. I can be honest with myself.
If you’re ruled by others’ expectations, stand up for yourself. Work out what you stand for and what your dreams are. Start today. You’re doing me a favour by taking the message to heart, but the biggest favour is to yourself.
Best wishes, Martin
Det er jo som talt ud af min mund 🙂 Jeg er bare en jysk bonderøv i stedet for. Læren må så være, at både stenbrodrenge og bonderøve kan hygge sig i klip-klapper her i Florida ved at være dem, vi er. Do it – do it now! 🙂
