Leadership – responsibility, employees and my own mistakes

I’ve learned about leadership through my own mistakes, employees and businesses. You can start here with four questions from my book Min vej som leder: Do you want to be a leader? How do you give people responsibility? What motivates the team? And can the business function without you?

Leadership starts with choosing the role

Being good at your profession isn’t the same as wanting to lead people. I had to distinguish between building a business and taking responsibility for employees day to day.

Should you become a leader? Read the questions I had to ask myself.

Give people freedom within clear boundaries

An overlooked part of a campaign at Jubii taught me something about my own responsibility. Employees need to know the goal, the room they have to act and the support they can count on. A task hasn’t been delegated just because the leader tells people to figure it out themselves.

Read the story about freedom with responsibility.

Make employees’ work meaningful in practice

At Dinero, the mission became tangible when colleagues understood customers’ bookkeeping problems and could use that understanding to make decisions. Here I describe, among other things, our work on a correction button and cooperation between support and development.

Read about motivation and a tangible mission.

Can your business cope while you’re on holiday?

What happens if you’re away for two weeks? I use that question to think about whether I’ve given others a real chance to take responsibility. It’s also connected to my own balance between work and life outside it.

Read about balance as a leader.

Where can I read more about your approach to leadership?

The four articles explore themes from Min vej som leder. The book guide has a chapter overview, edition details and links to booksellers. If you’d like to follow my more recent thoughts, you can also read about culture and innovation as a business grows.
