Talented people seem able to do everything, but they get help
Getting help in your business is part of the job, even when others seem able to do it all. I heard a podcast about John F. Kennedy and the speechwriter behind one of his speeches. It got me thinking about something that could discourage me when I was younger.
How the hell could adults do all those things? Some could compose music. Others could build electronics. And if you were going to be a CEO, surely you’d need to know an incredible amount.
I found it overwhelming. Just how clever did you have to be to take part?
You see the result, but rarely everyone behind it
I can still be impressed by what other people can do. Of course talented people exist. But one thing we overlook is how much help lies behind what we see.
A great speech by a politician or business leader isn’t necessarily written by the person delivering it. There may be skilled speechwriters behind it. And the same applies in companies.
On Instagram, Facebook and in newspapers, you often see the polished side and the finished results. You don’t always see all the people who’ve contributed. So it’s easy to get the impression that the person out front can do everything themselves.
Get help in your business: I don’t run Dinero alone either
Take me as an example. I can’t code. I can’t design. And accounts aren’t something I’m interested in or good at either.
I have skilled people who can go through the figures and tell me where there’s room for improvement. We have marketing people who do marketing and a PR team that handles that side. Others build and develop the product.
If I had to handle every task at Dinero alone, the company wouldn’t work. I can’t just take over everything.
Part of my job is talking to people, motivating them and helping them have a good working life. When people thrive, they’re happier and better able to be creative. That’s what I can contribute.
I share more of my management experience in Min vej som leder.
That’s a skill too. But it doesn’t make me someone who can do everything.
Don’t lose heart
My point is that you shouldn’t give up on something just because it looks overwhelming. The people you admire also have flaws and areas where they need help.
You don’t have to be able to code, design, write speeches, understand every set of accounts and do all the marketing to get started. You need to find out what you can contribute yourself and get help with the rest.
If you’re young and feel everyone else can do things you’ll never be able to do, remember that. Behind the person you see out front, there’s often a hell of a lot of other people helping.
So have some confidence. Go for it.
