Google Affiliate Network
Google Affiliate Network is something I notice at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas. I did not realise Google also had an affiliate network. So I think it might interest you if you sell products or have a website where you can help other businesses sell.
I discuss the network in January 2010. The prices, options and comments here describe what I am told at the trade show at that time.
What is an affiliate?
Affiliate Summit is a conference for affiliates. If you do not know the term, it means a website selling other companies’ products. It could be a large website such as Yahoo, a smaller website or your own.
The affiliate network keeps track of how many products are sold, and the website gets a commission on the sales. It is quite interesting.
For software companies, I say in the video that around 20 per cent of revenue can come through affiliates. That can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. That is my description of the opportunities at that time.
If you have a website yourself, you can also be the one selling other people’s products. Perhaps you already know that, but I am sure plenty of people do not quite understand the opportunity. Also read E-pusher about my experiences of selling online.
Google Affiliate Network at the trade show
What I did not realise is that Google has its own affiliate network. I show their stand and explain that, from what I have heard, they bought a network and put it under the Google name.
I do not know whether this is news. My people from SpamFighter tell me it happened a little while ago. But since I did not know about it myself, perhaps you do not either.
What is interesting is that the network is already really big. From what I am told, it is also easy to work with if you use AdWords and Google’s other advertising systems.
I do not know the exact integration, but there is an integration. It is supposed to make it easy both to bring ads onto your own website and to get your own ads into the network.
What am I told about the price?
According to my people, it costs around 1,000 dollars to get started if you have a product you want to sell through the network. After that, it costs 25 per cent of the commission you pay your affiliates.
So it is 25 per cent of the affiliate commission, as it is explained to me in the video. I think that is at the lower end, which is why I suggest taking a look at Google Affiliate Network at that time.
My comment on Google’s role
Finally, I mention something I find interesting: I have heard that Google removed an incredible number of affiliate websites in the six months before the launch. In the video, I say "reportedly" and connect it to the idea that Google itself can better skim the cream off the market.
It is a suspicion and a comment I make in 2010, not something I document in the video. In that connection, I think there is reason to question Google’s "Don’t be evil" message. But I leave that aside and return to the network.
I will find more interesting things to talk about from the trade show. This time, it was Google Affiliate Network that caught my interest. Take care.
Take a look at Google Affiliate Network. It is quite interesting!
